"Blind Justice"
Posted by Nu at this on Mar-05-05, 02:12 PM (PST)
I believe this new series is coming to NBC (forgive me if I'm wrong). Do we really want to watch a blind character solve crime week after week. Something about it is unsettling to me. A blind main character kind of turns me off. Am I some kind of biggot or something?

If it bothers you, don't watch.

Years ago Sterling Silliphant, one of the greatest writers in TV history (Naked City, Route 66, the Oscar winning feature In The Heat of the Night) created and produced a series about a blind detective. Relatively speaking, nobody watched that one and it went away.

I don't think you're bigoted, but you do have issues. It's up to you to find out how serious they are and how deep they go.

By the way, Brody's wife Gwen is blind, but you'd never know it. Those of us who know and love her would bet money on her ability to solve any crime.

Yeah, but I probably wouldn't watch it on TV unless I got to sleep with her.

And I know I won't watch THE BLIND DETECTIVE even if it IS a Bochco show. New! New! Give me something - anything - new!

I agree... not about the sleeping with Gwen part... but about the show.. I'm sure Gwen is lovely...

Here in L.A. there is a giant billboard for this show every three blocks and the previews for the pilot are on constantly.. and still I have no interest in watching this show.

Cop shows should be gritty not sappy and I can't see a blind guy roughing anyone up.. or doing the hard sell in an interrogration room...it just wouldn't happen..

Having said that I will watch the pilot.. just in case I'm wrong :)

I knew I might offend someone if I posted that message. Sorry, I really don't have any prejudices against the blind. I just don't think I could follow a blind main character in a tv show. I get distracted by the way the actors must be told not to look directly in the camera. And sunglasses are a distraction too. I loved Raymond Burr in "Ironside" and the character, so my uneasiness can't be because the character has a disability.

I apologize, it is going to be on ABC. They pushed it heavily during the commercials on their MOW that came on tonight.

If a blind person writes a pilot that gets picked up, then the show about the blind person would probably make for great TV. If a bunch of assholes in a room said: "How about if the main character is blind?" then it will probably suck.

I've been blessed, and have not faced any serious struggles in life (other than those I have imposed upon myself). If I write something I know, it rocks. If I say "what if I was a dipshit and this main character was a dipshit too?" then it sucks.

Boom. Get up and dance.

Yes Deila, I think you do have a problem with a disability. You have a problem with those who are Blind. My wife, who happens to be blind, and I did not think the premise was good because it would be nearly impossible for a blind person to work as a policeman who investigates and goes on the street.

Having said that and having watched most of the episodes of the series, I can say that the character of Jim Dunbar has grown. The lead actor Ron Eldard has played his character well.
On the most recent episode of May 17, 2005, Dunbar was asked to essentially get another blind person to take charge of their life again and stop acting like an invalid. This other blind person was in denial. This is reality in the blind community and it happens every day. My wife talks about it because we have friends who are in denial about their vision loss and she works as a professiional in the field.

By the way there have been a couple of episodes where Dunbar has pulled a Scipowitz (tuned up) a witness. The guy is in great physical shape and it also freaks out the perp that the blind guy is hitting him in the gut.

The fact that you would even say you couldn't follow a blind character because he might not look into the camera is shameful. Shame on all of you for not accepting people with disabilities, visual or otherwise.

....But why is everyone pretending that BLIND JUSTICE is not a reimagining of LONGSTREET?

And how come LONGSTREET has not been yet brought into the discussion?

I agree. That's the first thing I thought when I saw the previews... the guy is blond and looks a lot like James Franciscus with a new do.

The Sterling Silliphant series I mentioned was Longstreet. Longstreet made such a poor impression on me that I couldn't remember the name.

I was writing high art at the time. Gunsmoke, I believe. (That's a joke, HJP.)

But now that you mentioned it I remember. I watched it too. They only had 3 channels back then, who knows what it was up against. Didn't he have a white dog? I can't remember any episodes or whether or not I liked it.

Yes. He did have a dog. Overall, the show was ok. It could have become great - had it been given a chance.

Herbie:

You're an opaque watercolor mixed with a preparation of gum?

Or did you intentionally spell gauche that way to tie in with the "high art" thing?

Very clever!

Here in the East I just saw the first 30 minutes of the pilot. It's your run-of-the-mill cop show.
They're doing that thing I don't like: the blind guy looks at everybody's knee caps or wears sunglasses. He has a dog.

I couldn't remember the name of the earlier blind detective show, but I remember when there was publicity about several shows with "handicapped" main characters. There was Ironwhozis in the wheelchair, Longstreet, and Cannon. Yes, Hollywood considered being fat a handicap.
I heard a radio ad that said this new one is produced by Mr. Bochco (actually it just said "the producers of 'NYPD Blue",) so I have to hope it's not horrible, but then I see the ads where he can smell the gunpowder that his partner can't smell, I assume they are going with all the usual stereotypes.

I stumbled "home" (not ibid. for much longer, but that's another story) just as this was airing, so checked it out. I believe I have professed my admiration for the actorly skills of Martin Short elsewhere on this board. Well, there he was guesting on SVU during the same time slot. Who wins?

BLIND JUSTICE held my attention over the other. Yes, being the only guy on the force with a sense of smell was a bit obvious, but that was the lowest ebb -- and you can't say (the rest of the) NY cops being depicted as obnoxious piss-contest types willing to overlook little details isn't accurate.

Daredevil daredevil daredevil without the fun...

We do need more cop shows though, different from the run of the mill. Here's my suggestions, and I would hope that Brody will start shooting tomorrow at the latest:

DEAF PLEA - A deaf lawyer's keen sense of sight enables him to fight crime by lip reading.

SMELLS LIKE TEEN JUSTICE - A prodigal teen Chief of Police with a lisp track down criminal gangs members with his highly developed sense of smell.

and, this one should win an Emmy for sure:

HARRY S. CORPUS - A color blind motician turned lawyer uses his highly developed sense of plaid to catch fashion offenders in the act.

All winners, Larry, jump on board now, send me a contract, excedrin, excedrin...

According to the message board on the site, Pax has cancelled this series. But from what I can glean about the cast, which is mostly Canadian (except for the titular star), it's a Canadian content show and may well be continuing up north.

There. That wasn't so hard, was it?

Hey, I remember Longstreet, and I thought it was really good. It was based on the books by Duncan McClain, and tried to develop characters, not just shootouts. I hope they repeat it. Blind Justice gets my vote.

I've just seen 3 episodes now and I'm really enjoying the storylines. Its character base is balanced well with the plot lines so we get to know them well. So far so good for me. I remember Longstreet and compared it when I saw the first episode. I don't think Jim Dunbar will have Bruce Lee to teach him to look after himself like Longstreet did though!

If you guys would just get your noses pointed back down to earth and give this series a fair look I think that you will see there is quality in it. Forget about it just being another run at Longstreet or another sell as a NYPD replacement and give it a chance to stand on it's own, you'll see some pretty decent acting and a growing relationship with each character as they develop. The young dectective Bettencourt will end up being the hottest actess on tv by the end of the season and if the network is smart they will renew it for another go round.

Blind Justice keeps on getting better and better as the cast truly meshes together as a team and Dunbar's vulnerabilities and challenges are displayed. I want to tune in each week to see what's next. I hope peole will give it a chance and a full season run to develop to its potential.
