"Columbo & Family Business Boxed Sets"

Gang--

I've been sent screeners of boxed sets of COLUMBO and FAMILY BUSINESS DVDs.

We were going to review them, but when you down to it, what can we say about shows that have already been on? So here's my take, which is, I guess a kind of review.

The fact is that If you're a fan of COLUMBO or FAMILY BUSINESS, then these new boxed sets are for you. And if you're a technophobe fan, or someone ill at ease with DVDs, these new boxed sets are still for you because they're easy to navigate through. Buy 'em!

Everyone at Cloud Creek likes this stuff enough to have made the collections prizes at WriteSafe this time around. Now that's a great recommendation, right?

Enter early and often!

LYMI--

Picked up season 1 of Columbo the day it went on sale .
Then (dammit!) wound up watching the entire first season in a single sitting AND WANTED MORE!

Here's to waiting breathlessly for Columbo season II, (as well as season 1 of News Radio).

Family Business is a fun show, I could only imagine the extras. . .

Does anybody know the reason the Odd Couple has not been made into a DVD series yet? In New York, WPIX airs two epsiodes on Sunday/Monday morning at 1am, but that really is not enough.

From the FAQ at www.oddcouple.info

1. Is The Odd Couple available on home video or DVD?

No. However, the February 23, 2005 issue of the Wall Street Journal provided some hopeful news. The Journal reported that Paramount is planning to make use of its library of classics by issuing many of its tv series and movies on DVD. Among the list of tv shows mentioned in the article was "The Odd Couple." No other details (such as dates) were given, but as more information becomes available, it will be posted here.

In 2000, Columbia House released the show on home video in a series of 10 tapes, each with 3 episodes, but it is no longer being sold. The episodes on the tapes were:

* Tape 1: Courting Laughter - The Jury Story / My Strife in Court / The Dog Story
* Tape 2: On The Air - Big Mouth / Password / Let's Make a Deal
* Tape 3: Perchance to Dream - Scrooge Gets an Oscar / What Makes Felix Run / Sleepwalker
* Tape 4: The Odd Couple Write - I'm Dying of Unger / The Pen is Mightier Than the Pencil / Take My Furniture, Please
* Tape 5: The Odd Couple Stakes - A Grave For Felix / The Hustler / Felix, the Horse Player
* Tape 6: For Trip or Treat - Felix, the Calypso Singer / Sometimes a Great Ocean / The Flying Felix
* Tape 7: Grouse Spouse - A Night to Dismember / Gloria Moves In / This is the Army, Mrs. Madison
* Tape 8: Battles - The Odd Monks / The Odd Decathalon / A Subway Story
* Tape 9: Jobbed - Two on the Aisle / Felix's First Commercial / The Big Broadcast
* Tape 10: Health and Hospital - Oscar's Ulcer / Hospital Mates / Maid for Each Other

Columbia House also sold the show on home video during the early 1990s. Click here to see the video cover. This was also a 10 tape set, which is listed below:

* Vol.1: The Fight of the Felix / The Breakup / Oscar's Ulcer
* Vol.2: Oscar, the Model / The Big Brothers / It's All Over Now, Baby Bird
* Vol.3: Felix is Missing / Scrooge Gets an Oscar / They Use Horse Radish, Don't They?
* Vol.4: The Hideaway / Bunny is Missing Down by the Lake / You've Come a Long Way, Babe?
* Vol.5: A Taste of Money / What Makes Felix Run / What Does a Naked Lady Say to You?
* Vol.6: Natural Childbirth / Sleepwalker / A Grave For Felix
* Vol.7: The Fat Farm / Being Divorced is Never Having to Say "I Do" / Security Arms
* Vol.8: Where's Grandpa? / Partner's Investment / Oscar's Promotion
* Vol.9: A Night to Dismember / Big Mouth / The Pen is Mightier Than the Pencil
* Vol.10: Felix's First Commercial / The First Baby / The Odd Father

The 1968 movie starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon is currently available on home video from Columbia House.
2. How else can I get the show on video?

The best way is to try searching eBay or other auction websites to see if anyone is auctioning their set of tapes.

Note: Please do not e-mail me with requests for video tapes. I do not have any for sale.
3. What are the chances that the show will be released on DVD, and what can the fans do to help?

At this time, I do not have any information about whether the show will be released on DVD in the future. But I am optimistic, given the large number of classic tv shows that have been put on DVD in the last few years.

As I said before about getting the show back on tv, I don't know how much influence the fans could have in getting it on DVD. However, it certainly couldn't hurt to write to Columbia House and let them know that you would be interested in buying DVDs of the show if they are ever made available. You can write to them by visiting their Contact Us page.

You could also try contacting Paramount, who owns the rights to the show. Regarding home video and DVD releases, their FAQ page states: "If the title you are looking for is not listed, it may not yet have been scheduled for a release or we may not have rights. You are welcome to send us your recommendations and requests, however please remember that we will not be able to respond directly to your suggestions." You can get Paramount's contact information by visiting their Contact Us page.
4. But the Odd Couple is on DVD! I've seen advertisements on the web/message boards/eBay for a complete set of the show on DVD!

At this time, there are no official DVDs of the Odd Couple for sale. Any advertisements that you have seen are for bootlegs. This means that they were made by someone who either taped the show off tv, or used previous videotape releases, and made them into DVDs using a computer or DVD recorder. As a result, their quality and completeness cannot be guaranteed, and so I cannot recommend or endorse them. I know that many OC fans are anxious to have the show on DVD and would like to get them any way they can, including buying bootlegs. So if you are willing to take the risk, just remember the words caveat emptor (buyer beware).

To Irv,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post.

This is great news, even if there are no dates planned. I was tempted to buy to a bootleg DVD, but I had a bad experience with bootlegs in the past.

It's on Showtime. A quasi-reality series about a family of pornographers. Verrry classy.

Sure.

Here I will get heretical about "Columbo." I have enjoyed episodes of it, but I always wondered about the device of revealing the killer to the audience first. When Columbo shows up, he immediately centers all his attention on the person we know to be the killer (also usually a well known guest star.) He never seems to have any other theories or ideas before he starts to do his schtick with the guest star/killer. Sure he is brilliant in figuring out how to prove who the killer is, but how does he know from the very first moment of the investigation who he is after?

Who does he know? Because he reads the script, that's how.

In other words - and we've got to be very careful that this doesn't get any further - I agree with you. I always found Columbo unbelievable and dull, and on occasions when I was forced to watch it for one reason or another I always rooted for the bad guy.

Shh...
