Just a quick question...If I am writing a sitcom with no teaser leading into a credit sequence, but rather a cold open, would I title this as Scene One? Not a big deal, but I'm just curious how I should count the scene. Thanks.

It depends. If you are doing a spec of an existing show, then you would do it the way the show does it. If you're writing an original pilot, then you can do it however you want.Bonita

Most of the specs for various shows that I get--and there's a lot of them--call the cold open--get ready for it--"Cold Open."Think what I could do with the Gordian Knot! LYMI, Brody

Jeez, just asking. But my question actually regarded the second scene. I've seen it labeled "SCENE ONE" and "SCENE TWO" after the cold open. Not a big deal, but I thought there might be a more universal way to do it. And since none of my Raymond scripts are episodes with cold opens, I thought I'd ask.

"COLD OPEN",then... "SCENE ONE", or, "Scene 1" whichever. Technically, the Cold Open is a transition form of the old Teaser...and is handled the same way. However, if you're writing a spec -- get a copy of their scripts...they're all just a little different. :)

"Jeez, just asking."Does that mean you believe LB's response was too hard on you? I would suggest you find another business, my friend. Where I live, snideness and sarcasm are SOP. And that's when we all like each other. Orange (County) Julius (whose feelings are heavily fortified these days, which is probably why Irv the Nerve's lovelife is better than mine)

Oh, I can take sarcasm alright. In fact I invite it because it confirms that the other person doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.:)

You can't seriously believe that. Mistaking disdain for incompetence is costly. And mistaking goodwill for disdain is even more costly. But as my little brother says, "catcher's catch can." DT

LOL!!! Ditto that: "Mistaking goodwill for disdain is even more costly." Everyone is so testy here. I was just having fun. I'm not stupid and I love to have fun with the best of 'em. So bring it on! He-he.

That's cool, dude. But you gotta grasp the vernacular before you dive into the funning. If four people drew the same conclusion about your note... well, maybe there's some static on your end. It's like that Sprint PCS guy says. Static sucks. Go digital. DT

I believe that "Frasier" calls its opening sequences "Act One, Scene One." I've also seen some "NewsRadio" scripts where the teaser is just called "Act One, Scene A," even though it leads into a title sequence. So I think you'd be on fairly safe ground calling it "Act One, Scene One" (or Scene A), but I agree that the safest bet is to track down a shooting script for whatever show you're writing for.

Every script I've seen of Raymond starts with a Teaser, not a cold open. Do your homework, dude. Are you sure your scripts are actual produced episodes of the show? And why are you hating on Larry? He created this great site, he's a great guy--you shouldn't bite the hand that's trying to help you. Bonita

I'm just having a good time, just like the people who pounced on me after my first post. I don't take anything personally, and I assume no one here does either. I actually really like it here. Finally I found an intelligent message board used by people that I can truly learn from. It's certainly better than reading a book. By the way, I saw your Girlfriends episode last night. A lot of fun! Keep up the great work!Bradley PS: My Raymond scripts are straight from the production company, but I didn't have an episode where they didn't use an opening title sequence. I wasn't sure if they went with Teaser, Cold Open or Scene One when no title sequence is used. I guess that was my real question.

>Every script I've seen of Raymond >starts with a Teaser, not >a cold open. Do >your homework, dude. Are >you sure your scripts are >actual produced episodes of the >show? I never referred to RAYMOND. I referred to the actual produced scripts of FRASIER (cold open, which it called Act One, Scene 1) and the late lamented NEWSRADIO (which called the teaser "Act One, scene A"). Now who's not doing homework?

I've been playing the role of agitator a lot lately, so I'll switch hats and bring peace to the masses for a little while. The stuff about RAYMOND and homework that Bonita was referring to was this note by Funnin' Bradley: "Jeez, just asking. " So she wasn't slagging on you, even though the thread structure suggested otherwise. She was just calling out Bradman, which was way fashionable yesterday. Peace to all... but mostly to me, DT

For two seconds there I was quite proud of myself for having learned the word "thread" as it applies to message boards and using it in a sentence. Then I saw what I had actually written. So if this thread proves anything, it's that here in the new cyberworld the Prof is no longer a threat. Prof
