Ever since I was 12 years old (I'm 31 now), I have had a favorite book. My Grand Parents went to a book sale and found it. It was first published in 1902, I always thought it would be a great movie and I would love to make it into a script. My question is this: 1. I believe it has passed into public domain, how do I make sure?2. Does Public domain mean that it would be allright for someone to use this book as a basis for a script? 3. How would I copyright something like this or could I even do that? Thanks for your time, Steve

http://promo.net/pg/ is the website for Project Gutenberg--if it has passed into the public domain these folks would know about it. Also you can do a Google.com search on "Public Domain books" and see what comes up. c

Yes, public domain means you can use the book as the basis for a script. Or publish it yourself as a book. You can't copyright the book again, but you can copyright whatever you create that was based on it. Copyright in the U.S. is automatic upon "publication." Go to the copyright website to learn what that means. And go to WriteSafe to register your script when it's finished too. Registration and copyright are NOT the same.Good luck -- have fun! Brody (who has invested real money in WriteSafe because I believe in it so much)
