Animation: The Silver Surfer

The good news is that THE SILVER SURFER was a major hit for the Fox Kids Network when it aired in 1997. The bad news is that legal differences between Saban and Marvel brought the series to an abrupt end. Although the problems have been resolved, this show is, sad to say, history, with other Marvel properties coming in to replace it.

In addition to the thirteen episodes that aired during the series' brief lifetime, I also wrote eight additional scripts for what we thought would be the second season. If you watched the show and are curious about what was supposed to come next you can get a pretty good idea by taking a look at the Episode Guide.

Every animated TV series--and most primetime series as well--begins with a Bible, and it serves not one, not two, but three purposes. First, it's a sales tool, drumming up interest in a show. Second, once the show is sold the Bible tells the network what to expect from each episode. Third, it guides the creativity of the writers and artists, getting them into the right mindset.

THE SILVER SURFER Bible is in two parts, the "Concept," which is a general overview of what this series is supposed to be, and the "Universe," which is a more detailed explanation. If you're interested in writing animation and maybe creating a series--or you just want to know more about THE SILVER SURFER--have a look.

Wait, there's more: An album of images from the show. That's right, we're talking character designs and even a hot piece of storyboard. Interested?

But this is the TV Writer page, isn't it? So in response to all the questions I get about what animated scripts are like, here are the three scripts that make up THE ORIGIN OF THE SILVER SURFER as shown on Fox last year. I don't know if I'm feeling generous or rebellious, but after thinking long and hard about the fate of THE SILVER SURFER I've decided that a little thing like cancellation shouldn't keep those of you who have become fans from at least reading how the Surfer was going to save the universe at the beginning of the second season. Here, then, is "THE END OF ETERNITY: PART TWO," a final draft doomed never to come to life on the drawing board.
